Manufacturing Engineer I
Location: Salem, IL
Work Arrangement: Onsite
Employment Type: Contract
Pay Rate: Up to $41/hour W2
Position Overview
Cullerton Group is seeking a Manufacturing Engineer to support high-volume manufacturing and assembly operations at a customer facility in Salem, Illinois.
This position will focus on improving production processes, supporting manufacturing equipment and assembly operations, and preparing production systems for new product introductions. The Manufacturing Engineer will work directly with production, quality, maintenance, and program teams to improve throughput, resolve manufacturing issues, develop process documentation, and ensure production equipment and tooling meet quality and delivery requirements.
Responsibilities
- Provide daily engineering support for manufacturing and assembly operations
- Troubleshoot production, equipment, tooling, fixture, and process-related issues
- Evaluate production layouts, material flow, operator workflow, cycle times, tooling, fixtures, gauges, and work-in-process storage
- Develop and implement improvements to manufacturing efficiency, quality, throughput, and reliability
- Support the development and introduction of new manufacturing processes and production equipment
- Evaluate new product designs for manufacturability and production readiness
- Determine tooling, fixtures, equipment, gauges, and other manufacturing resources required for production programs
- Support equipment installation, process validation, production trials, and manufacturing launches
- Develop and maintain manufacturing process documentation
- Create and update process flow diagrams, PFMEAs, process specifications, work instructions, and other APQP documentation
- Participate in Advanced Product Quality Planning activities for new and modified manufacturing processes
- Develop detailed engineering schedules supporting overall program and launch timelines
- Track engineering activities and ensure deliverables are completed according to project milestones
- Analyze manufacturing problems and perform structured root-cause investigations
- Develop corrective and preventive actions for recurring production and quality issues
- Support investigation and resolution of internal and customer-reported quality concerns
- Work cross-functionally with Production, Quality, Maintenance, Program Management, Product Engineering, and other technical teams
- Provide technical guidance and process training to production personnel
- Support continuous improvement initiatives involving safety, quality, cost, productivity, scrap reduction, and process capability
- Assist with engineering changes and modifications to existing manufacturing processes
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Industrial Technology, or a related technical discipline
- 0–2 years of manufacturing engineering, process engineering, industrial engineering, or related manufacturing experience
- Understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes
- Familiarity with manufacturing tooling, fixtures, gauges, and production equipment
- Understanding of root-cause analysis and structured problem-solving methods
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to work effectively with production employees, technicians, engineers, maintenance personnel, and management
- Ability to work onsite in Salem, Illinois
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in automotive or another high-volume manufacturing environment
- Experience supporting assembly operations
- Experience in a Just-in-Time (JIT) manufacturing environment
- Familiarity with APQP and PFMEA
- Experience developing manufacturing process flows and process documentation
- Exposure to new product introduction or manufacturing launch activities
- Experience with production line balancing, cycle-time analysis, or workflow optimization
- Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and continuous improvement methodologies
- Experience troubleshooting manufacturing equipment, tooling, fixtures, or automated assembly processes
