Job Description

Cullerton Group has a new opportunity for an IT Software Engineer 4. The work will be done in a hybrid environment based in Chicago, Illinois, with 1–2 days per week onsite. This is a long-term 12-month position that can lead to permanent employment with our client. Compensation is up to $102/hour + full benefits (vision, dental, health insurance, 401k, and holiday pay).
Job Summary
We are seeking a Senior Software Engineer to design, develop, and support scalable cloud-native applications within a modern distributed systems environment. This role will focus on building Java-based microservices, implementing AWS cloud solutions, developing event-driven architectures, and supporting highly available enterprise applications. The engineer will serve as a technical leader, contributing to system architecture, mentoring team members, driving engineering best practices, and ensuring reliable, secure, and maintainable software solutions. This position offers the opportunity to work on large-scale cloud platforms utilizing modern development, deployment, and observability practices.
Key Responsibilities
• Design, develop, and maintain cloud-native backend services using Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, and AWS technologies.
• Architect and implement scalable microservices, REST APIs, and event-driven systems supporting enterprise applications.
• Develop and maintain distributed systems utilizing asynchronous messaging, streaming technologies, and cloud-native services.
• Support production environments by troubleshooting defects, resolving performance issues, and improving system reliability.
• Conduct code reviews and provide technical mentorship to engineering team members.
• Collaborate with product owners, architects, and engineering teams to define technical solutions and integration strategies.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure automation, and deployment best practices.
• Improve observability through logging, monitoring, metrics, tracing, and operational excellence initiatives.
• Identify architectural improvements, reduce technical debt, and enhance system scalability and maintainability.
Required Qualifications
• 8+ years of professional software engineering experience in enterprise application development.
• Strong experience designing and supporting AWS cloud-native applications and highly available distributed systems.
• Advanced programming experience with Java and/or Kotlin in production environments.
• Strong experience with Spring Boot, microservices architecture, and RESTful API development.
• Experience designing and supporting distributed systems, fault-tolerant architectures, and resiliency patterns.
• Strong SQL and relational database experience, including data modeling and performance optimization.
• Experience with NoSQL databases such as DynamoDB, MongoDB, or Cassandra.
• Experience implementing CI/CD pipelines, deployment automation, and DevOps best practices.
• Experience with event-driven architectures, asynchronous messaging, and streaming technologies such as Kafka.
• Strong troubleshooting, analytical, communication, and technical leadership skills.
Preferred Qualifications
• Experience leading technical design discussions and mentoring software engineers.
• Experience with OpenAPI/Swagger documentation standards.
• Expertise in observability, monitoring, logging, metrics, and distributed tracing tools.
• Experience working within Agile software development environments.
• Experience supporting large-scale enterprise platforms with high availability and performance requirements.
• Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code practices and cloud automation frameworks.
