Electrical Documentation Engineer
Location: Chicago, IL
Work Arrangement: 100% Onsite
Employment Type: Contract – Initial 6 Months with Potential for Long-Term Extension
Pay Rate: Up to $55/hour W2 W2 or $65/hr C2C
Position Overview
Cullerton Group is seeking an Electrical Documentation Engineer to support electrical drawing verification, equipment documentation, and decommissioning activities at a large industrial manufacturing facility in Chicago.
The primary focus of this position will be reviewing existing electrical schematics and drawings, physically inspecting equipment and electrical systems on the manufacturing floor, identifying differences between existing documentation and actual field conditions, and updating drawings to accurately represent the installed equipment.
The engineer will also support equipment decommissioning projects by identifying affected electrical systems and documentation and ensuring drawings are properly updated following equipment removal or modification.
This is a hands-on engineering role requiring regular interaction with manufacturing equipment and electrical systems. The work must be performed onsite in Chicago.
The position will begin as a six-month contract with the potential to develop into a long-term engagement based on project needs and performance.
Responsibilities
- Review existing electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, panel drawings, and related technical documentation
- Perform field verification of electrical drawings against installed manufacturing equipment and electrical systems
- Trace electrical circuits, wiring, devices, panels, and equipment as necessary to verify existing conditions
- Identify discrepancies between engineering documentation and actual equipment configurations
- Redline existing electrical drawings to document required corrections and changes
- Create and revise electrical schematics and other technical drawings to accurately represent current equipment configurations
- Convert field notes and redlines into accurate as-built electrical documentation
- Verify equipment identifiers, electrical components, connections, panel information, and other drawing details
- Work with engineers, electricians, maintenance personnel, technicians, and manufacturing personnel to understand equipment configurations and historical modifications
- Research undocumented or poorly documented equipment modifications
- Maintain drawing accuracy and consistency according to established engineering standards
- Organize and maintain electrical documentation associated with manufacturing assets
- Support equipment modification and decommissioning projects
- Review equipment scheduled for removal or retirement and identify affected electrical documentation
- Determine which drawings, schematics, circuits, panels, and systems are affected by equipment removal
- Document electrical changes resulting from equipment decommissioning
- Update drawings to remove retired equipment and accurately represent remaining systems
- Assist with field verification following equipment removal or modification
- Ensure completed documentation is clear, accurate, and usable by engineering and maintenance personnel
- Track drawing revisions, outstanding discrepancies, and completed documentation
- Coordinate documentation priorities and project schedules with engineering leadership
- Follow all facility safety procedures while performing field verification activities in an active manufacturing environment
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related technical discipline
- 2+ years of experience supporting electrical engineering, industrial electrical systems, controls engineering, manufacturing equipment, or electrical documentation
- Experience reading and interpreting electrical schematics and wiring diagrams
- Experience reviewing or updating electrical drawings
- Ability to physically inspect equipment and compare installed conditions against engineering documentation
- Working knowledge of industrial electrical components, control panels, wiring, circuits, sensors, motors, disconnects, and related equipment
- Experience using AutoCAD, AutoCAD Electrical, or comparable electrical drafting/design software
- Ability to understand electrical equipment and systems sufficiently to identify discrepancies in technical documentation
- Strong attention to detail and documentation accuracy
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- Ability to communicate effectively with engineers, electricians, maintenance technicians, and manufacturing personnel
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple drawing/documentation assignments
- Ability to work safely around operating industrial and manufacturing equipment
- Ability to work 100% onsite in Chicago, Illinois
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working in a manufacturing, industrial, utility, or heavy-equipment environment
- Experience creating or maintaining as-built electrical drawings
- Experience performing field verification or drawing walkdowns
- Experience redlining electrical schematics based on actual field conditions
- Experience with industrial controls and automation systems
- Familiarity with PLC-controlled manufacturing equipment
- Experience with electrical control panels and machine electrical systems
- Experience supporting equipment modifications, relocations, or decommissioning
- Experience working with legacy equipment where electrical documentation may be incomplete or outdated
- Experience maintaining engineering drawing libraries or document-control systems
- Familiarity with electrical safety practices in an industrial environment

The engineer will work directly with equipment and engineering personnel onsite; therefore, this position cannot be performed remotely.
